Make Your Own World

For this week’s post I am presenting the links to two pieces I posted this week on the award-winning U.S. Intellectual History blog that I think might also fit well here and be of interest to our readers. These meditations touch on topics we have been exploring here on our blog, including technology, community, and precarity.

I’m only a novitiate in blogdom, but I wonder if we’ve found the rough equivalent of Paris cafe culture in the 20’s — talk outside and even against the academies on all those existential-cultural-poetic themes: history, loneliness, little and local and global communities, art and philosophy . . . ? People used to talk about “New York Intellectuals” and know what and who was meant. Still true? Probably not, but there are a few cyber cafe tables I’ve discovered in the past few months, and I enjoy sitting in, and chiming in from time to time. Nice to find you sitting here, Elizabeth, and thanks, Eric, for inviting me over. Hold on, I’m ordering a coffee.
